Description of the Flat Stone Ethiopian Opal Pendant
Ethiopian opal is a variety of opal, a semi-precious stone renowned for its beauty and beautiful rainbow colours. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word “Upala”, which means “precious stone”. In Latin, it is called Opalus, which means “to see a colour change”. Opal is covered with different iridescent reflections depending on the angle from which it is viewed. This play of light and colour is reminiscent of the rainbow. Numerous beliefs have been formed over time around opal. The Greeks attributed clairvoyant powers to it. The Romans considered it a symbol of hope and purity. For the Arabs, opal fell from the sky at the same time as lightning and therefore represents protection against lightning. In the Middle Ages, it was thought that this stone was beneficial for treating sight problems. It was then called “ophthalmos” which we can translate as “eye stone”.
The main opal deposits are in Australia and Mexico. However, significant deposits of opal have been discovered very recently in Ethiopia. Ethiopian opal is also called Welo opal after the region where it was found. The deposits are located at an altitude of over 2,500 m in the Semien-Wollo Mountains in the north-east of the country. They also contain a high level of water. Mining of this stone only began in 2008. It then became a highly coveted stone because of its beauty. Ethiopian opal is mainly white and yellow in colour. But it also has shades of blue, green and orange. This stone has the particularity of being hydrophane. This means that if it is immersed in water, it can become completely translucent.
